My experience studying the holocaust has made me realize the truma that people had to go through just because of their relious beliefs. Throughout this unit I have learned the ways that Hitler rose to power using propaganda, the fear of others, and more. The Holocaust matters not just because of the vitcims involed and lives lost, but also because history can repeat its self and if we all learn about how this happened we can prevent ourselfs from getting in the same situation. The Holocaust can connect with my life and others lives because it reminds us how life could be worse and also how lucky we are. It is very important to honor the trauma of the victims and survivors because we must remeber how brave and strong they had to be to get through the holocaust and still remain positive. We also must remember the courage of some of the family members that were not jewish but went just so they could be with their family. In Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech he said that the survivors must remember that they are not alone and that we will not forget them, and also that we will speak up for them when they can’t. In our Europe Cultures in Conflict Course Packet on page 12  there is a photo of Dr. Sophie Ehrhardt. The picture shows associate of Robert Ritter’s Eugenic and Criminal Biological Research Station in Berlin matching a woman’s eye color to an eye color chart. This photo has made me realize how discriminatory the Nazis really were. They wanted everyone to look the same, they went so far to get doctors to participate in this using their propaganda. This photo is sad to see because everyone was discriminated against in a way. Some worse than others. It’s sad to see this photo also because everyone was supposed to be someone else. People wanted to change themselves so that they could be accepted by others.

    I like how you connected our study of the holocaust to our lives and we didn't realize how bad their lives were just because of their religious believes. I also liked how you talked about Dr. Sophie Ehrdardt. Overall great job! :)

    I completely agree that the Holocaust not only matters because of the victims involved and lives lost, but also that history can, and has repeated itself before. I also like how you connected our studies of the holocaust to how horrible their Nazis made their lives because of their religious beliefs. I think that overall, you did a really good job!

Before our unit of the Holocaust, I didnt fully understand how brutal this time period was. In the book Night , Elie talked about his experience at the concentration camp, which was extremely hard to read. Going to the Holocaust musuem was even harder. When we watched life is beautiful, they talked about how they take older people and children into a room and tell them that they are going to take them in for a shower. But they actually put them into a gas chamber. And at the holocoaust museum I saw a picture and there was someone who knew what was going on with the gas chambers and was throwing out her kids, screaming let me die and not them. But an overall question I had during this unit was that, did the people torturing the Jews actually believe that they think it's fair to take innocent people to a concentration camp, or were they just afraid of Hitler and had a better advantage because they were German. Throughout our study of the Holocaust, most of my time was spent processing how one man, more or less, managed to cause this horrendous event in human history. Hitler’s movement was the reason the word “genocide” was created. I know that when we think of events like these, we don’t necessarily associate them with our present.
